Culinary Crime

[book covers]Mystery fiction seems to be inordinately filled with food and drink. Many mystery authors are accomplished cooks or at least gourmets and gourmands, so they include food in their novels. This should not appear strange to the reader. Sitting down and eating a meal is something with which the reader can easily identify and which functions to move the plot along by allowing for dialogue and comment. In addition, recipes parallel mystery plots. The detective, like the cook, organizes chaos into order.

So it's not surprising that the Mystery Readers Journal, the official publication of Mystery Readers International, has devoted several issues to Murder on the Menu. The most recent issues are entitled Culinary Crime: First Course and Culinary Crime: Second Seating. Be sure and check out the tables of contents for these two Killer issues complete with sample articles and recipes.

Bon Appetit!
